The best alternative is JACK Audio Connection Kit, which is both free and Open Source. The only alternative I could suggest is JACK. But you might want to make sure its sample rate is set to 44100 or 48000, since those are usually the least problematic. Multizone playback feature in jRiver is pretty awesome for whole house audio systems. There are more than 10 alternatives to Sound Siphon for Mac, Windows, Linux and BSD.
